Ford Focus on a workshop lift

Ford DPF problems: what to do when the warning keeps coming back

The DPF light went out after a clean, then came back a week later. Or your Ford now says the exhaust filter needs a service, and somebody has suggested a motorway run.

Before trying either again, read the exact message. A request to help the filter clean itself is different from a warning that needs workshop attention. A recurring problem also needs more explanation than “the filter is blocked”.

What does the DPF actually do?

A diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust. Regeneration burns that soot off. Ford’s 2022 Kuga handbook explains the process and the different filter messages.

That handbook is an example, not a universal procedure for every Focus, Kuga, Transit or Ranger. Find the instructions for your model and build date through Ford’s owner manuals.

Drive to clean, or service now?

The Kuga handbook distinguishes a cleaning message from “Exhaust filter over limit Service now”. The latter requires servicing. It also warns that the exhaust becomes very hot during regeneration, creating a fire risk around combustible materials.

Do not turn “DPF warning” into a generic instruction to drive at a set speed or engine revs. Follow the applicable handbook only if the vehicle is otherwise safe and the message calls for that action. If it has lost power, is overheating or shows other serious warnings, arrange assistance instead.

Why might the warning return after cleaning?

A receipt for a clean tells you a service was carried out. It does not, by itself, explain why the warning appeared or show that the cause was resolved.

Ask the garage to separate three points:

  1. The original finding. What codes, measurements or tests established the problem?
  2. The work done. Was this a regeneration, a removed-filter clean, a repair elsewhere in the system or a replacement?
  3. The result. What was checked afterwards, and what evidence shows the system is working?

Give the next repairer the earlier report and invoice. Repeating the same paid treatment without those answers can leave you with the same decision again.

What information should you take to the garage?

Photograph the full message when parked safely. Record the model, engine, mileage, normal journey pattern and when the warning returned. Say whether the car has lost power and what other work was done recently.

Ask for a diagnosis of the system, rather than choosing a part from a forum discussion about a different Ford. If the garage proposes further investigation, agree its cost and the point at which it must contact you before continuing.

Cleaning, replacement or selling as it stands?

Get a written total covering diagnosis, parts, labour, VAT and the checks after repair. Ask whether existing warranty cover applies before approving work.

If you want to keep an otherwise suitable car, a confirmed repair may make sense. If you were already planning to sell, compare an offer now with a realistic repaired sale price after deducting the complete bill. Include other known faults and an upcoming MOT.

Our Ford repair-or-sell guide explains that comparison. If emissions were part of a failed test, the MOT failure guide helps you read the result without assuming every failure needs an expensive repair.

Can you sell a Ford with a DPF fault?

We Buy Broken Fords accepts faulty and non-running Fords. Request a quote with the registration, mileage, warning and any diagnosis. Tell us if it cannot be driven so collection can be discussed.

A warning that has temporarily disappeared should still be disclosed alongside the repair history. If the cause is unconfirmed, describe the symptoms rather than inventing a diagnosis.
