Ford clutch replacement: what should the quote include?

One garage has quoted for a clutch. Another says the flywheel needs doing too. The totals are different, but it is not yet clear whether the jobs are different.

A Ford clutch replacement quote needs the exact model, engine and gearbox, plus an assessment of the fault. A price for a Fiesta clutch is not automatically comparable with a diesel Focus or a working Transit.

This guide concerns manual-transmission repairs. If your Ford has the dual-clutch automatic, use our Powershift guide instead.

Describe the symptoms before choosing the job

Tell the garage whether the clutch slips, the pedal has changed, selecting gears is difficult or there is a noise when starting or switching off. Explain whether the problem began after earlier work.

Ask what has been established from the inspection. Component manufacturer ZF’s clutch-slipping guidance identifies several possible causes, including faults in the release system and contamination. It is not always simply a worn clutch disc.

Do not perform an aggressive road or stall test to prove the fault. If the car cannot be controlled or driven reliably, arrange assistance and describe the symptoms to the repairer.

Does a rattle mean the dual-mass flywheel has failed?

A dual-mass flywheel is a separate component from the clutch kit. Ask whether your particular Ford has one, whether it has been assessed and why replacement is recommended.

ZF’s flywheel noise service note warns that noises attributed to a flywheel can originate elsewhere, including starting-system problems. The sound alone is not sufficient grounds to buy a replacement.

Inspection can involve work before the final scope is known. Agree how the garage will show you its findings and obtain approval for additional parts. Ask it to retain photographs or the relevant inspection report.

Compare these items, not just the final number

Item Question for the garage
Clutch kit Which components and part specification are included?
Flywheel Is replacement included, optional pending inspection or excluded?
Release system What is included for the bearing or slave cylinder where applicable?
Labour and other materials Does the total include the complete job, required fluids and VAT?
Aftercare What warranty and post-repair checks are included?

Parts listings and advertised averages can help you ask questions, but a clutch kit on its own is not a fitted repair. Two estimates may also assume different findings when the gearbox is removed.

Ask for the price of diagnosis separately if the cause is unconfirmed. Agree a spending limit and an approval point before the garage goes beyond the quoted job.

What if it had a new clutch recently?

Give the repairer the previous invoice and explain how the symptoms changed after the work. Contact the original garage about any workmanship or parts warranty before paying for the same job elsewhere.

A recent replacement is useful history, not proof that the clutch system cannot be the source. ZF’s guidance includes causes of slipping that can affect a newly fitted clutch.

Is repairing the Ford worthwhile?

If the rest of the car is sound and you want to keep it, a defined clutch repair may be worthwhile. If there are several other bills due, include them rather than valuing the decision as one isolated repair.

If you intend to sell, compare the realistic repaired sale value after all costs with an offer now. Our repair-or-sell guide explains the calculation; our valuation guide covers the information needed for an offer.

Request a quote for the Ford as it stands. Include the symptoms, diagnosis and repair estimate. Say whether it can select a gear, roll and be accessed for collection. There is no need to label every clutch problem as a failed gearbox.
